ABOUT
LEARNING THROUGH DISCOVERY, EXPOSURE,&
ASK TIM
For over a century, education has largely been organized through courses structured within disciplines, departments, and the like. While highly effective, this structure presents limitations to discovering ideas across fields and to encountering new domains of knowledge.
The digital era began expanding access to knowledge. Since 2001, MIT OpenCourseWare has made MIT course materials openly available to learners around the world, followed by interactive platforms such as MITx.
Today, MIT is building the next architecture of learning. MIT Learn brings together MIT’s courseware, programs, and disciplines into a unified discovery platform designed to expand exposure to ideas and enable interdisciplinary exploration.
By increasing exposure to ideas across fields, this architecture supports double-loop learning—a form of learning in which individuals not only acquire new knowledge but also question underlying assumptions, rethink mental models, and integrate insights across disciplines.
Guiding this discovery is Ask Tim, MIT Learn’s conversational AI assistant, which helps learners navigate courses and resources aligned with their interests and goals.
In this session, MIT Vice Provost for Open Learning Dimitris Bertsimas will discuss how MIT Learn is evolving into a new front door to the Institute’s global learning ecosystem—expanding the ways learners discover knowledge, connect disciplines, and explore ideas.

EVENT FEATURES
Inside the Next Architecture of Learning
Join MIT Vice Provost for Open Learning Professor Dimitris Bertsimas for a presentation and discussion on the evolution of learning systems and the development of MIT Learn as a new front door to MIT’s global learning ecosystem. The session will explore how MIT is integrating courseware, programs, and disciplines within a discovery-oriented environment designed to broaden exposure to ideas and encourage interdisciplinary exploration. It will also highlight how Ask Tim complements search and browsing by helping learners quickly identify relevant courses and resources across MIT’s offerings.
Learning Objective
Understand how the architecture of learning is evolving from isolated courses toward discovery across disciplines.
This session explores how MIT Learn broadens exposure to ideas by integrating MIT’s course materials, programs, and fields of study into a unified learning environment. Participants will examine how greater exposure to knowledge supports interdisciplinary discovery and double-loop learning — where learners not only gain new information, but also question assumptions, rethink mental models, and connect insights across domains. MIT OpenCourseWare has helped expand public access to MIT learning since 2001, and MIT Learn builds on that legacy through a new discovery architecture.
Action Learning
Explore MIT Learn as a platform for navigating knowledge across disciplines.
Participants will see how learners can discover course materials, programs, and new fields of study through MIT Learn’s search, browse, and discovery tools. They will also see how Ask Tim, MIT Learn’s AI-powered conversational recommendation feature, helps learners go beyond search to find courses and resources aligned with their interests and goals.
